“People get to living for a job, make a little money, start living for a car, get em a wife, a house, kids, and a dog. Then they retire they’re living high on the hog…but see your money, your singleness, marriage, talents, your time; they were loaned to you to show the world that Christ is divine.”- “Don’t Waste Your Life”

OBSESSED WITH T-SWIFT’S NEW SONNGGGGG!!

The tricky thing

Is yesterday we were just children

Playing soldiers
Just pretending
Dreaming dreams with happy endings
In backyards, winning battles with our wooden swords
But now we’ve stepped into a cruel world
Where everybody stands and keeps score

Everybody’s waiting for you to breakdown
Everybody’s watching to see the fallout
Even when you’re sleeping, sleeping
Keep your ey-eyes open
Keep your ey-eyes open
Keep your ey-eyes open

So here you are, two steps ahead and staying on guard
Every lesson forms a new scar
They never thought you’d make it this far
But turn around, oh they’ve surrounded you
It’s a showdown, and nobody comes to save you now
But you’ve got something they don’t
Yeah you’ve got something they don’t
You’ve just gotta keep your eyes open

Keep your feet ready
Heartbeat steady
Keep your eyes open
Keep your aim locked
The night goes dark
Keep your eyes open.”

“So miss him. Send him some love and light every time you think of him, then drop it. You’re just afraid to let go of the last bits of (him) because then you’ll really be alone…If you clear out all that space in your mind that you’re using right now to obsess over this guy, you’ll have a vacuum there, an open spot - a doorway. And guess what the universe will do with that doorway? It will rush in - God will rush in - and fill you with more love than you ever dreamed. So stop using (him) to block that door. Let it go…you’re wishin too much, baby. You gotta stop wearing your wishbone where your backbone oughtta be.”

- Just one of my favorite parts of the book “Eat, Pray, Love.” It makes me feel so empowered and throws a bit of tough-love perspective. I think it is so well-put but beautiful and can be used in so many situations, not just with guys. Think about the trivial things that take up our mind. Things that, in the grand scheme of things, are not worth our time and bring nothing but unhappiness. When they creep into your mind recognize their existence, realize their pettiness, and drop them.

I read a quote today that really struck me. “Don’t allow yourself to wake up with yesterday’s issues troubling your mind. Refuse to live backward.” It’s a simple statement and there are a million like it, advising us to not look back and live life looking ahead but for some reason this one has remained salient in my mind all day. The use of the words “don’t allow” and “refuse” are so empowering and remind us that we have a choice. Having the past creep into our lives through a smell, a song, or your facebook newsfeed is absolutely inevitable (delete fb? joke). As humans we are built on our experiences and there for who we are today depends on those past moments that created our foundation. We do, however, absolutely have the power to look fondly on the past, respect it’s value in our life journey, and move on.

Playing the “what-could-have-been” game is dangerous because, yes, you may look back & thank God you didn’t go down that road, but you may also look back and become consumed by your desire to rewind and do it over again because of some strange hybrid of regret and curiosity. We’ve all seen the TV shows where a character travels back in time to fix a moment only to realize that when they return to the future their life has been altered inexplicably. It’s cliche but true: you cannot be who you are now without accepting who you once were. It isn’t fun anyways!

Yes, it’s frightening to look at a path ahead of you that curves so abruptly you cannot see where it is taking you, but turning back would waste that amazing journey of finding what lies ahead. You already know what’s behind you and because it is behind you I would venture to say it wasn’t that worthwhile anyways. The day your mind is consumed with more thoughts of the past than the future is the day you have stopped appreciating, stopped experiencing, and stopped embracing life. That is the day you take control, force your mind to look forward, and refuse to live backward.
